EPAs & PBAs
To following documents are available as a guide to assist Trainees, Supervisors, and Trainers in undertaking the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and Procedure Based Activities (PBAs) for the GSET Program.
Please be aware that these are reference documents – assessments must be completed via the Trainee Information Management System (TIMS).
Please note: In 2025, the rating scales for Procedure Based Activities changed to:
- Able to Perform with Minimal Supervision
- Requires Significant Supervision
- Arrange and complete surgery for a simple acute case
- Assessing simple new elective case in outpatient clinic
- Delivering results to a patient
- Discharge planning for a complex patient
- Leading a team ward round
- Management of acute admissions - evening or weekend shift
- Present at MDM / X-ray meeting
- Presentation at departmental meeting
- Run a student teaching session - topic based
*In 2025 the Opportunistic Teaching Session EPA was removed from the EPA Requirement

Principal EPAs
- Arranging acute surgery for a complex condition
- Management of a new cancer patient in the outpatient clinic
- Delivering news to a patient - end-of-life prognostic discussion
- Delivering news to a patient - unable to undertake procedure on the day
- Operative supervision of a junior colleague
- Present at MDM / X-ray meeting of a complex case
- Anastomosis
- Appendicectomy - laparoscopic or open
- Examination under anaesthetic - incision and drainage of perianal abscess
- Groin hernia - laparoscopic or open
- Open and closing abdominal incision
- Simple laparoscopic cholecystectomy with or without intraoperative cholangiogram
- Small bowel resection
- Stoma formation
