Excellence in Surgical Teaching Award
The GSA Excellence in Surgical Teaching Award was established to recognise the valuable contribution of a SET/GSET Supervisor or trainer/mentor that has positively impacted on the training program and/or Trainees, due to actions beyond the expectations of their role.
ERROL MAGUIRE AWARD
Awarded to the best original scientific paper presented in the areas of Breast or Endocrine Surgery by any one of the following:
- General Surgery
- SET/GSET Trainee
Specialist International Medical Graduate - PFET Trainee
The prize includes the Errol Maguire Medal and up to $2,500 to be used towards attendance at the GSA ASM in the two years following the prize being awarded.
NABEEL IBRAHIM AWARD
Awarded to the best original scientific paper presented in the areas of Hernia or Abdominal Wall Surgery by any one of the following:
- General Surgery
- SET/GSET Trainee
Specialist International Medical Graduate - PFET Trainee
The prize includes the Nabeel Ibrahim Medal and up to $2,500 to be used towards attendance at the GSA ASM in the two years following the prize being awarded.
JOHN HAM MEDAL
Awarded to the best paper presented by any one of the following who submits an abstract based on research undertaken during current or previous research towards a higher degree (including Masters or PhD research):
- General Surgery SET/GSET Trainee
- *General Surgeon (Provisional Fellow) in a clinical post
The prize includes the John Ham Medal and up to $2,500 to be used towards attendance at the GSA ASM in the two years following the prize being awarded.
*Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons precludes eligibility
NOEL NEWTON PRIZE
Awarded to the best paper presented by a General Surgery Trainee involved in full-time clinical practice.
The prize includes the Noel Newton Medal and up to $2,500 to be used towards attendance at either the 2025 OR 2026 ASGBI Annual Congress.
GSA RESEARCH AWARD
Awarded to the best research paper presented by any one of the following who are involved in full time clinical practice:
- General Surgical Trainees
- Specialist International Medical Graduates
- Non-accredited Registrars
- Interns/PGY2
- Medical Students
The prize includes the GSA Research Award Certificate and up to $2,500 to be used towards attendance at the GSA ASM in the two years following the prize being awarded.
GSA POSTER AWARD
Awarded to the best original scientific poster. This prize is valued at $500.
AUSTRALIAN CHAPTER CICD/ISDS PRIZE
Awarded to the best original scientific paper presented in the area of Gastrointestinal Surgery. This prize is valued at $500 and is proudly sponsored by The Australian Chapter of CICD/ISDS.
**Any of the above prizes may not be awarded if papers do not meet the research criteria.**
