Diverticulitis is a common gastrointestinal condition caused by inflammation of colonic diverticula. Most presentation are uncomplicated, yet management has traditionally involved routine antibiotics and  hospital admission. Contemporary international evidence recommends outpatient  management without antibiotics for selected patients with CT-confirmed uncomplicated diverticulitis. Recent international research demonstrated that Australasia has the lowest rates of outpatient management and continued high rates of antibiotic use, highlighting a persistent gap between evidence and clinical practice.

Australia and New Zealand general surgeons will be invited to complete an anonymous online survey. The survey will assess current management, knowledge of evidence supporting conservative management and perceived barriers to implementation of evidence based care. Data will be analysed descriptively, with comparisons between demographic and practice groups where appropriate. The findings will help identify factors contributing to variation in practice and inform future implementation of evidence based diverticulitis pathways.
