The Fellowship Examination

The Fellowship Examination – overseen by the RACS – is a summative assessment undertaken towards the end of the training program, or as a requirement of an SIMG assessment.

The examination comprises written and clinical/viva components. There are seven segments in total, with most being divided into two written papers and five clinical/viva segments.

The required standard for this examination is a level of competency equivalent to that of a consultant surgeon in his or her first year of independent practice. The surgical competencies espoused by the RACS are used as a guideline for the examiners who follow agreed marking guidelines and the predetermined standard. The examination is blueprinted to each specialty’s curriculum.

RACS has prepared the following Notes to Candidates – General Surgery – which Trainees might find beneficial:

The Patient History and Clinical Examination Assessment has been designed to assess the Trainee on their ability to clinically examine a patient.

Trainees wishing to apply for the Fellowship Exam must submit three (3) valid Patient History and Clinical Examination Assessments with letter of support (refer to the relevant section of the Regulations).

All Trainees – including Exam Pending Trainees – are required to submit these assessments.
