Clinical Duties:
The fellows will be responsible for overseeing the care of trauma patients admitted to the Trauma Service. There are approximately 1600 admissions/year to the Trauma Service. He/she will be expected to function at the level of a junior consultant. Clinical trauma nursing staff support includes a 3x Trauma CNCs as well as Trauma Research Nurses. The fellows alternate coverage for the Trauma Service on a weekly basis. During this week on service, the fellow will be expected to provide leadership for the service, including all Major Trauma calls. He/she is expected to supervise and teach the junior members of the Trauma Service. The fellow will be supervised by the Trauma Consultant of the week.

THE ROLE
Elective Surgery:
There are opportunities to participate in elective general surgical procedures if so desired. A general surgical list and an HPB list are available for the fellow(s) to be involved with.
On-call Duties:
The fellows will alternate weekly calls as the primary senior on-call for trauma. After hours, the on-site registrars will contact the fellows for every major trauma, and attendance is expected for any “Code Crimson” and/or significant multi-trauma requiring senior decision making leadership.
The fellow will be expected to take primary senior call for acute surgery, when the trauma surgeons are on call. This equates to approximately 1 night per week and 1 weekend in 8. In-house call is not mandatory, but prompt attendance is expected.
Teaching and Administrative Duties:
The fellow will be expected to be involved with teaching of surgical trainees as well as medical students. Application for a clinical academic appointment with the University of Sydney will be supported. The fellow will be responsible for presenting the multi-disciplinary Trauma Audit as well as preparing the yearly death review.
Formal Research Component:
At least one presentation at a national/international scientific meeting. At least one research publication in a peer reviewed journal.
The research component is supported by a longstanding trauma registry, data manager, and trauma research staff. There is close collaboration with the Westmead Hospital/University of Sydney Surgical Outcomes Research Centre.
