Overview
The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is a tertiary public hospital in Herston, Brisbane. It has close to 1000 beds and is part of the Metro North Hospital and Health Service. It is a major referral centre for patients north of the Brisbane river and up to Rockhampton. It has most surgical services on site, except cardiothoracic and transplant surgery.
The Trauma Service was established in 2008 and is currently undergoing a major re-organisation in the lead up to trauma verification by RACS.
The Trauma Service has and inpatient bed card that manages multi trauma patients in a multidisciplinary way as well as a consultation service which helps to manage trauma patients admitted under other subspecialties.
There are close to 3000 trauma presentations per year and around 1700 admissions. In 2023 there were 164 presentations that met trauma respond criteria and 16 patients that were red blanket (code crimson) to theatre.
We have access to 24/7 Interventional radiology, ICU with the capacity for ECMO and a multidisciplinary trauma activation team available 24/7.

THE ROLE
Management of inpatients on the trauma bed card – depending on specialist qualifications and future scope of practice.
Operative management of multitrauma patients – depending on specialist qualifications and future scope of practice.
On call for trauma team activations.
The ability to gain operative experience in other subspecialty areas not related to their primary surgical qualification. For example, access to elective and emergency theatres for vascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and general surgery for any surgical fellow.
Participation in research. There are number of partners on site and close by – Jamieson Trauma Institute, University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Herston Biofabrication Institute, QIMR Berghofer.
Supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and medical students.
Participation in cadaver courses run by Queensland Ambulance Service – surgical airway, thoracostomy, thoracotomy.
Participation in quality improvement activities including trauma m&m, trauma review committee and others.
