Overview

Role Description

Fulfil several targeted activities to improve the delivery of general surgical services to patients at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) and to assist in the coordination and training of Surgical Registrars and Resident Medical Officers (RMOs).

The role will involve a mix of the following objectives:
• The undertaking of approved general surgical outpatient and inpatient services.
• Participation in the after-hours Registrar/Consultant on-call rosters.
• Provision of leadership and mentoring for surgical registrars and RMOs in training.
• Assisting with quality improvement, audit and service improvement within the Department of Surgery. Also dependent upon qualifications and interests of the incumbent, there may be the opportunity to be involved with other teaching and research activities.
• Within the four broad position objectives described above, the incumbent will be responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the LGH. There may also be a need to periodically participate in the after hours cover at the hospital as determined by the Director of Surgery.
• Responsible for the day to day management of private and public in patients and outpatients within the allocated site/facility.
• Provide after hours emergency cover as determined by the relevant work unit.

Details of appointment:
Fixed term full time, day worker (with on call) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 2 February 2026 until 31st January 2027.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Salary:
Career Medical Officer Level 1-7 $128,750 – $183,340 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging
• Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Please note that access to the Senior Career Medical Officer salary range $187,460 – $206,000 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Career Medical officer and application approved as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
