Selection Process - Stages

Stage One - Registration

Anyone intending to apply for Selection must register their intention to apply within the specified time-frame. At the time of registration, applicants must be able to meet all generic eligibility requirements. The registration fee must be paid by any applicant who is not a current SET or GSET Trainee or RACS Fellow. SIMGs who have been recommended to apply to GSET must also pay the registration fee. All registrations are conducted online via the RACS website – surgeons.org. Potential applicants for selection into GSET cannot register via the GSA website.

Doctors who have registered for Selection via RACS and have been confirmed as satisfying the generic eligibility requirements may then lodge an application for Selection by the advertised closing date.

The Selection application is made via General Surgeons Australia and eligible applicants will be emailed further details on how to submit their application.

The online application comprises a structured Curriculum Vitae (CV), which captures information and evidence of:

  1. Qualifications
  2. Publications
  3. Presentations
  4. Scholarship and teaching
  5. Indigeneity
  6. Rural origin
  7. Rural education
  8. Rural and Remote Surgical Experience

Your application will also need to include:

  1. Contact details for Referees
  2. Evidence to show that you meet the 26 week General Surgery minimum eligibility criteria

Limit to the Number of Attempts

Candidates are advised that the Board has not introduced a limit to the number of attempts to apply for selection for 2026. The Board had previously indicated this would be introduced however this limit has not been introduced for 2026 (2027 intake).

Validity Period:

The validity period for minimum clinical rotations and rural and remote surgical experience has been kept the same as the 2026 intake process to account for a smaller intake in 2025.

Please be advised that the validity period will revert to the usual two clinical years in 2027 for 2028 intake.

Stage Two - Application

In 2026, the Selection fee for General Surgery (Australia) will be $1,320.00 (incl. GST).

The collection of Professionalism Referee Reports occurs across a two week period.

Stage Five - Interviews

To proceed to Interview, scores are combined from the following tools, to determine ranking:

  1. Rurality
  2. CV
  3. Professionalism Referee Reports

Should you achieve the minimum standard, you will be invited to Interview. You will be provided at least ten (10) days’ notice of the Interview date.

Following the Interview stage, applications will be classified as one of the below:

SUCCESSFUL

 

An eligible applicant who satisfied the minimum standards for Selection and in the ranking of combined weighted scores of all applicants – scored high enough to be made an offer.

UNSUCCESSFUL

 

An eligible applicant who satisfied the minimum standards for Selection but who did not rank high enough in comparison to other applicants to be made an offer.

UNSUITABLE

 

An applicant who failed to satisfy a minimum standard for Selection.

Stage Six - Offers
