Overview
The Royal Melbourne Hospital is a RACS accredited, Level 1 Major Trauma Service that cares for over 4,000 patients per annum, of which 1200 are classified as major. The RMH is integrated into the highly functioning Victoria State Trauma System, and receives patient locally and from all over the state by road, rotary and fixed wing aeromedical evacuation.
The Trauma unit has its own bed card, and at any one time has up to 60 patients cared for by a consultant, a fellow, one SET Trainee and 2 pre-SET trainees, and 2-3 Residents s. The trauma service runs in parallel to the Emergency General Surgery Service (EGS), and share dedicated all day operating lists and outpatients clinics

Opportunities
THE ROLE
Delivery of quality patient assessment and treatment both directly and through the supervision of junior staff for trauma and EGS, Monday to Friday, 0800-1700.
Involvement primarily in the clinical activities of the emergency general surgery (EGS)and trauma services (TS) each morning (handover and ward rounds).
Opportunity to be involved in Thoracic Trauma Surgery including rib fracture management (E.g.: rib ORIF).
Attend weekly Trauma Radiology Meeting, teaching meeting and Morbidity and Mortality meetings.
Attendance at trauma calls during the day and high acuity notifications after hours when on call Attendance as deemed appropriate.
Attend the designated EGS and Trauma Service lists (3 per week)as primary operator supervisor or assistant (with consultant back-up).
Attendance as deemed appropriate, as primary operator or supervisor (with consultant back-up) or assistant at time critical theatre lists with trauma and emergency general surgery patients.
Attend and supervise junior staff at outpatient clinic.
Work on quality assurance activities, e.g. reducing length of patient bed stay and reducing surgical complication rates.
After hours on call commitment is 1 in 5 to 6 remote 1800-0700.
When combined with EGS, the service is immensely busy, with direct Consultant presence and a strong ethos of teaching and training.
The RMH has maintained a large trauma registry since 1999 and includes of over 63,000 patients, which can provide many opportunities for publishable research.
Teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students.
