Toronto General Hospital
Location: 585 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario
The Toronto General Hospital (TGH) is a major Canadian teaching hospital located in the heart of the city’s Discovery District with other major healthcare and research facilities including the internationally recognized Hospital for Sick Children, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, (5th largest Cancer Centre in North America) and the Toronto Research Institute. TGH is part of the University Health Network and serves as a teaching hospital for the University Of Toronto Faculty Of Medicine training resident physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and technicians.
TGH is also one of the largest organ transplant centres in North America and houses the major transplantation service for Ontario, performing heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas and small intestine, amongst others, for patients referred from all over Canada.
The hospital is equally renowned for cardiac and thoracic surgery and is where the world's first single and double lung transplants were performed. In 2015, surgeons at TGH also performed the world's first triple organ transplant (lung, liver and pancreas).

Opportunities on the Unit:
This is a world-renowned transplant-training program that comprises 2 years; the first year involves cases that are more straightforward and includes a 3-month exposure to HPB surgery. The second year involves more complex cases, including living donor and paediatric liver transplantation.
There is a large case volume: approximately 200 adult liver transplants, 20 paediatric liver transplants, 50 pancreas transplants, 200 kidney transplants and a smaller number of intestinal transplants per year. The trainees are involved in all aspects of transplantation, including workup and immunosuppression.
There are excellent opportunities for education, with two consultant led ward rounds per day, regular multidisciplinary and audit meetings, videoconferences and a locally developed video atlas. Research is well supported, including a research database, research assistant and statistician.
