Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) is a designated Magnate, Status 1 tertiary trauma hospital. There are 1,011 beds throughout the hospital. The transplant ward has 16 beds, the adjacent nephrology ward has 14 beds and both wards have immediate access to the eight bed, high-dependency dialysis unit that is co-located in the transplant ward. In addition, PAH has 88,000 admissions per year and there are 61,000 emergency presentations per year.

Given the size and scope of PAH, there are ample opportunities for renal transplant training, professional development and research.

Opportunities on the Unit:

The unit services the State of Queensland. As such, there is a large volume of transplant clinical material. The case load includes exposure to complex living and deceased donor transplant procedures, including dual kidney transplantation, paediatric renal transplant surgery and cold perfusion storage of kidneys for transplant. There is access to patients being evaluated for transplantation and the fellow will be involved in post-transplant management, including immunosuppression. Fellows will be involved in a large volume of other surgical procedures, including dialysis access. They will also be involved in deceased donor procurement and transplantation procedures. One of the strengths of the unit is the exposure to general, urological and vascular surgeons who have expertise indifferent complex aspects of transplantation. NB Laparoscopic living donor surgery mentoring is a separate urological fellow appointment.
