2023 Simulation Workshop 2

On behalf of General Surgeons Australia and the Victorian/Tasmanian Training Committee, it is with pleasure that we invite you to participate in the 2023 Simulation Workshops.

There will be three simulation workshops on offer for trainees and SIMGs to attend which is being coordinated by Dr Fiona Reid and Dr Chiu Kang. Each workshop is convened by experts in the field.

As these workshops are being offered free of charge, we anticipate that they will be extremely popular. Places will be offered on a first-come first served basis.

Note: Due to the workshops being offered free of charge, any Trainee or SIMG who registers but does not attend will be prohibited from attending any future simulation workshops.

Laparoscopic CBD Exploration Workshop

Afternoon group – 13:15– 17:00, (replica of morning session)

Objective

Introduce the trainee to the principles of laparoscopic CBD exploration, including indications and equipment required. Allow trainees the time to practice the motor skills required to perform this procedure safely.

Management of Surgical Emergencies Course - Gold Coast

Eligibility

  • SET 3-5 General Surgery Trainees
  • Specialist International Medical Graduates

The MOSES course aims to assist SET 3+ Trainees, IMGs, and Consultants to:

  • Make better decisions, negotiate dilemmas, and manage distractors in emergency surgery
  • Reduce error
  • Achieve better outcomes
  • Work more effectively within a team
  • Improve situational awareness
  • Provide strategies for getting out of trouble
  • Assist with Fellowship Exam preparation

Run over two full days, MOSES involves a variety of teaching methods including core lectures, skills stations, and group discussions. The course focuses on assessment and decision making skills for emergency situations, within the peri-operative period covering, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Upper Gastro Intestinal Bleed/ Gastro Intestinal Bleed
  2. Gastrectomy
  3. Bowel Obstruction
  4. Abdominal Emergency
  5. Post Thyroidectomy Bleed
  6. Laparotomy
  7. Complications after rectal surgery
  8. Intestinal Obstruction
  9. Soft Tissue Infection

With a high ration of faculty to a low ratio of participants, MOSES will offer you an excellent opportunity to develop strategy and problem solving skills for commonly encountered surgical emergencies in a small team environment, with senior General Surgical Consultants. MOSES is aimed at International Medical Graduates and senior SET Trainees, particularly Trainees and IMGs who are contemplating their Fellowship exam, and post Fellowship General Surgical Fellows/Consultants.
